What you see: Trieste

Trieste, one of the most fascinating Italian cities, the crossroad of the Latin, German e Slavic worlds. Cities with numerous boundaries, not merely geographical but also cultural and historical. The atmosphere of the city can be traced back to its Austrian roots. The “Piazza dell’Unità d’Italia” or square dedicated to Italian Unity, o ers a majestic panorama of the sea. Opposite we can nd the 18th-century Municipal Building, whose style recalls the distant Byzantium, the baroque pillar on which stands the statue of Charles VI and the fountain of the Four Continents. Along the right side of the square there are a row of interesting buildings such as the Lloyd Triestino building, the proverbial and ancient navigation company with two allegorical fountains on its facade, a majestic hotel and the 18th-century Palazzo Pitteri. We will visit colle di San Giusto, the Cathedral and the Roman theatre, which was commissioned by Emperor Trajan and built between the 1st and 2nd centuries A.D. with admission to the Castle of Saint Justus (a fortress-museum situated on the hill bearing the same name).

What you see: Grotta Gigante

The exceptionally large size of the main underground chamber of the Grotta Gigante, situated near Borgo Grotta Gigante, in the municipality of Sgonico (Trieste), enabled it to enter the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s largest show cave in 1995. The cave can be accessed by a downhill tunnel; the ights of steps lead down to the main chamber, which is 98,50 metres high, 76,30 metres wide and 167,60 metres long (total volume 365.000 m3): the cave is crossed by a geodetic pendulum for the study of earth tides. The oor and the ceiling are covered in stalactites, stalagmites and other speleothems of all sizes, among which it is worth mentioning the most impressive one, Colonna Ruggero, that is 12 metres in height. The Grotta Gigante is also an important underground scienti c research centre (Pendulums, Seismographic Station, Archaeological excavations, Flora and fauna research centres, Muon radiography, Radon monitoring) and surface scienti c research centre (Climatological Observatory of the Karst, Epigean station for the measurement of karst dissolution).

What you see: Magredi Area

Magredi are on the high plain of Pordenone’s province where rivers Cellina and Meduna sink into the aquifer. In this area you will nd a wide variety of typical ora and fauna.
“Magredo” means “barren land”, an arid and poor land because because of its pebbles, although the frequency of precipitation makes Friuli-Venezia Giulia the rainiest region in Italy. In the summer, dry meadows of Magredi look barren and burnt by the sun and create a landscape similar to some wastelands of the South or the continental steppes of Eastern Europe.

What you see: Marano Lagoon

The Marano Lagoon, contained between the last coastal point of Lignano Sabbiadoro and the Grado Lagoon, is a landscape of extraordinary beauty that hosts unique fauna and ora of signi cant naturalistic importance. Protected from the open sea by a series of islands and islets, like Sant’Andrea, also known as Isola delle Conchiglie, it is characterised by swampy vegetation and the unique shermen’s lodgings, the typical “casoni”, built with cane and wood, that make Marano Lagoon one of the most interesting places in the Upper Adriatic Sea.

What you see: Aquileia

Aquileia (in Friuli-Venezia Giulia), one of the largest and wealthiest cities of the Early Roman Empire, was destroyed by Attila in the mid- 5th century. Most of it still lies unexcavated beneath the elds, and as such it constitutes the greatest archaeological reserve of its kind. The patriarchal basilica, an outstanding building with an exceptional mosaic pavement, played a key role in the evangelization of a large region of central Europe.
